Well, do you want to play like Clapton?

Seriously, I think someone could learn some basic chords and strumming methods reasonably quickly, but to be a hot player of either lead or rhythm would take most of us mortals some time.

A lot of pop music may involve less theory in playing bass, but it's equally important to a band or mix for the bass to be played well.

Anyone can learn to play. I play for 7 years and I have learned most of the theory by myself. However there are techniques that are rather difficult and sometimes I get desperate, but I guess I'm just pushing myself too hard.
The thing that keeps me going is the love for the music.
The whole process requires a lot of hard work, but the reward at the end is priceless.

I agree with BlackNo1. The process takes time, but if you're fortunate enough to find it gratifying itself, then you're in a good position to get some results.

Speaking of theory, I think that can save you some time and help you get working in the right direction.

I find it very difficult to learn how to play it. I recently bought an acoustic guitar and it's just dusting in my room.. Maybe i should hire a tutor or something..

i play the guitar.. it wasnt that hard to learn for me.. but. before i learned to play the guitar.. i played piano.. soo i already knew the theory.. but ur right.. u do need to learn the theory.. but it would be hard for someone who has no past experience in playing music to be able to learn a new instrument without lots of practice.. but once u learn the theory you should be able to teach yourself.. well atleast thats what i did.. but then again i play like 3 instruments.. so it varies on the person.

I have tried learning to play the guitar since I was in grade school, but I never did learn to strum. I have given it up as a lost cause.

I also found playing the piano helped with theory and learning guitar. I find the keyboard laid out in a straight line with only one key for each note a little more straight forward than a fretboard, where some notes can be played on more than one string.

I wouldn't say it's hard, but it's time consuming if you want to become a good musician. I started playing when I was ten and it took about two years of constant practice before I could just start playing something that I just heard on the radio. Probably didn't help that my hands were small since I was a kid, so doing a lot of the finger stretching was pretty hard.

I think people can be discouraged easily early on if they're practicing on a guitar with a challenging action.

For example, the difference between an acoustic with heavy strings and a high action compared to an electric with light strings that's set up nicely is huge.
