I mean that's a very vague question. It could cost anything from nothing to millions of dollars. What kind of thing are you looking for? Are you wanting to release the album commercially? Are you going to record at home or in the studio? There are loads of different costs involved, it's really about how much you're willing to pay

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't....you're probably right

Such an impossible question to answer.. depends totally on your vision, expectation, budget, etc.
Think about, a beat from Dre or Tim can be $250,000+, one guest feature from Lil' Wayne can cost about the same. One track just cost you $500,000 and you didn't even pay for studio time, CD duplication, distribution, promotion, etc.
Then again.. make your own beats, no features, digital distribution, self-promotion. You ain't paid anything yet and all you need is studio time.
I'd always recommend using a studio to record and mix, but for the price of a Macbook, an MBox2 Mini and a half decent mic and some cables you could even do it all yourself for around £1,000.
What kind of music are you making, what size of fan-base do you have, what level do you want to operate at and what kind of budget are you talking?

It would be helpful to know what you already have... buy a mac, get some RAM, some good speakers or headphones, a controller keyboard. Software you can find, ahem, for free, a good mic and pre, audio interface, maybe an A/D D/A converter, etc...

If you're using VST software, there are some very usable legal free demo versions out there. I use Addictive Drums and the Jupiter 8V, for example.
Also I'd add that a friend of mine is producing his first Reggae album, and it's costing him more than the next one will, because he spent more money on his particular "learning process" and will be able to avoid some expenses in the future.

What DAW are you planning to use? Maybe get Logic for your Mac, it is very powerful software and there are a lot of good instruments and effects/processors, etc., there already and you can record MIDI or audio. There can be a steep learning curve with it though. Then get a controller keyboard and a decent mic and audio interface.
If cost is not important you can go crazy, buying mic pres, desks, synths, compressors, AD/DA converters, effects units, and so on.
