In the past I've rented a few things and kept on with them till I eventually bought them, where a portion of the rental was applied to the price. I've rarely rented gear for a single project.

There's a chain of music stores called Long & McQuade in this area that offers that deal.

I haven't rented from them for awhile, but years ago I was paying more each month to that store than to my landlord.
