I love wearing earbuds - they are the most comfortable things to wear to listen to music and I can't walk around with those big headphones anyway. Although, I think they might be harmful for the hearing in the long run. Guess I'll have to wait and see what happens.

I really feel uncomfortable using ear buds Its like some one has held my ears and really get irritated but you know it is good to use them where you feel it has to be .But one thing ,you must be careful in using them like if you use a very small piece of cotton it is dangerous as this may go inside the ear.I suggest to try a scarf or a muffler instead of ear bud.

I didn't know that using cotton is dangerous, I have used cotton many times I use it full size though I don't break it up usually. If I do I definately don't break it up small enough to go inside my ear drum. You could take it out with tweezers if it gets into your ear to far, there is little chance on it going to your ear drum as the wax would stop it.
I am a bit confused when you say to use a scarf or muffler how would those send sound through ear buds or anything?

I think any object inserted into the ear could be a potential problem. I worked with someone who went to the hospital because a walkie-talkie earpiece broke and became stuck in his ear.

I also heard about someone who died using a Q-Tip on their ears - But I forget the details and I think that was kind of a freak accident involving broken skin and an infection or something like that.

I'd be very careful with tweezers around the ears.

I think it ultimately comes down to the type of ear buds you are using there are many ear buds that are built to ensure comfort and also to ensure it doesn't damage your ears. I like the small ear buds as they are easy to carry and they are overall simple to just shove in your backpack or pocket. Plus they are a little less obnoxious as those huge earphones. Haha
